AIn’t it interesting – Supply Chains are becoming Exception-driven
In my last few posts, I have been exploring how signals move across supply chains, and how AI layer can connect data, build context and support decisions!
Which raises a practical question?
If everything becomes more visible, what do supply chain teams spend time on?
A) The old model
→ For a long time, supply chains teams monitored everything, tracked everything, reviewed every report and reacted when something breaks!
→ A lot of effort goes into watching dashboards, reconciling numbers & chasing updates!
B) The problem with that approach
→ Modern supply chains generate way too many signals – demand fluctuations, shipment updates, inventory changes, supplier variability etc.,
→ Most of these signals don’t need action, but they still consume attention, which leads to alert fatigue, delayed responses & missed priorities
C) What starts to change?
→ When signals are connected and context is built, not everything looks equally important anymore. Some signals
a) have no real impact
b) can be absorbed by buffers
c) sometimes they resolve on their own
→ Other signals
a) will cascade across functions
b) will impact service or cost
c) require coordinated decisions
This is where the shift happens – from managing everything to managing exceptions that matter
D) What is an Exception?
→ An exception is NOT an alert, it is a deviation from plan, with meaningful impact, requires a decision and spans multiple functions, involves trade-offs & has a time window to act
E) Where AI fits?
→ The AI layer filters and prioritizes
a) separates noise from impact
b) connects signals across systems
c) quantifies potential outcomes
d) surfaces only what needs attention
F) What is the impact on supply chain teams?
→ Less time spent on tracking, reconciling & chasing
→ More time for deciding coordinating & resolving trade-offs
The subtle shift from ‘Plan-driven + monitor everything’ to ‘Signal-driven + act on exceptions’

→ Exception-driven doesn’t mean reactive, it means
a) knowing things that matter sooner than later
b) focusing attention on where it counts
c) making fewer and better decisions
AIn’t it interesting how supply chains may not need more visibility, but better focus on the few things that require action?
