AIn’t it interesting – Control Towers don’t make decisions (Yet)

Let’s talk about Control Towers. Most enterprises have implemented control tower, and at first glance, that sounds like a solution
a) Better visibility
b) Unified dashboards
c) End-to-end view

But here’s the uncomfortable part – visibility doesn’t automatically lead to better decisions!!!

A) What control towers solved?
→ They brought fragmentation under control –> data from multiple systems in one place, real-time tracking across orders, inventory, shipment and a shared operational view
→ This was a big step forward, but it mostly solved ‘What is happening?’

B) Where the gap still exists?
→ Even with control towers –> signals still need interpretation, impact is not always clear, decisions remain distributed and alignment still takes time
→ So teams still analyze, discuss, escalate, decide and often… react late

C) What’s changing now?
→ As signal volumes increase, this model starts to strain –> Too many alerts, Too many dashboards and Too many things to look at
→ The problem is no longer seeing, it is deciding

D) Where AI starts to transform?
→ AI doesn’t replace the control tower, it upgrades it from a visibility layer
to a decision-support layer!!

→ Instead of just showing data, the system begins to

→ detect anomalies (demand, delays, inventory)
→ distinguish noise vs meaningful deviation

→ connect signals across systems
→ trace cause & effect across functions
→ understand dependencies

→ service risk
→ cost implications
→ downstream ripple effects
d) Recommend actions
→ expedite, reallocate, adjust plan.
→ simulate alternatives before acting
e) Prioritize decisions
→ what needs attention now
→ what can wait
→ what can be ignored

F) What this changes
→ The control tower stops being ‘a place to look at data’, and becomes: ‘a place to decide what to do’

Control Tower = visibility
To
Control Tower + AI = visibility + understanding + decision support

AI doesn’t eliminate human decisions, it makes them
→ earlier
→ more informed
→ more aligned across functions

AIn’t it interesting how the next evolution of control towers may not be about seeing more, but about helping teams decide faster, with shared context?
