AIn’t it interesting – what will change? (and what won’t)

As AI is disrupting supply chains, a more practical question comes up! What will change? And just as importantly, what won’t change?

A) What won’t change?
→ Supply chains will continue to be constrained, uncertain and full of trade-offs
→ There will always be demand variability, supply disruptions, capacity limits & imperfect information
→ And finally, humans will still make the final decisions!!!

B) What will change?
→ The nature of the problem wont change, but the speed and quality of response is where AI will make an impact
a) Fewer Surprises (not ZERO surprises) – issues will still happen, but they will be seen earlier!
b) Faster Decisions (not perfect decisions) – time spent on detecting, interpreting and aligning…will reduce!
c) Less Fire Fighting – some disruptions will still require escalation, but fewer will be last-minute surprises
d) Better Consistency – similar situations will lead to more consistent decisions, less dependent on individual experience
e) Better Coordination (not centralization) – decisions will remain distributed, but better aligned across functions

C) What this means?
→ AI doesn’t simplify supply chains, it makes them more manageable
→ The biggest takeaway is not better forecasts or smarter algorithms, it is about less time spent figuring out what’s happening AND more time spent deciding what to do!
→ The shift is from ‘reactive coordination under pressure’ to ‘proactive coordination with context’

AIn’t it interesting how the future of supply chains may not be about eliminating complexity, but about handling it with less friction and fewer surprises?
